How did you find your way to outdoor education?
I’ve always loved and appreciated nature. When I had children, I thought an outdoor, play-based environment was an amazing opportunity for learning. I spent many days at program during the years my children attended, and though they have since moved on to traditional school, I’m not ready to to leave yet!
What’s one value or skill you hope every child takes from your classroom?
I hope every child learns to notice, appreciate, and engage with the world around us. When we stop and look, there is so much beauty and wonder all around - pretty rocks, strange bugs, cool mushrooms. The discoveries to be made are truly endless!
What’s your favorite children’s book or story to share?
My favorite children's book is "They All Saw A Cat". In this story, a cat goes about its day being seen by many different creatures, and sees its own reflection at the end. Each illustration shows how differently each one "sees" the cat - from a terrifying giant from the point of view of a mouse, to vibrations sensed by a worm. Not only does this book invite discussion about animal senses, it introduces a profound message about shared truths, differing perspectives, and our own self perception through a stunningly simple narrative that kids love.
What’s one small joy that always makes you smile at school?I love to hear the kids call out "Come and see this!" I always want to see what discoveries they have to share, even if it’s the same squirrel we see every day. They know I really do want to see the squirrel!
